In 2018, I hit rock bottom. I felt lost, unhappy and drained. I was drinking too much, stuck in a dead-end relationship and filled with frustration and self-loathing.
Desperate for change, I Googled, "How to be happy," and found an exercise to list:
Areas where I was happy and why.
Areas where I was unhappy and why.
What it would take to be happy.
For the first time in years, I was honest with myself. My "happy" list was short: my home and my body. My "unhappy" list was overwhelming: my relationship, family connections, daily feelings and career.
That’s when I realised I needed a serious change. I ended my relationship, moved across the Atlantic and started fresh. At 31, I was single, homeless and unemployed—but I’d never felt so alive and free.
This turning point taught me that our growth is our own responsibility. Self-love comes from aligning with our values and what truly matters, not from pleasing others.
